Most of the people – and by most I actually mean all of us – think that celebrities, like actors or singers are random people who never had to work hard to get a degree and were just lucky enough to become famous from one day to another!
Well, I’ll have you know that this doesn’t apply to all the rich celebrities out there and that some of them are not only looks and talent – some are actually way smarter than you and me and studied things you would never have imagined!
From neuroscientists to psychologists or medical doctors, these celebrities will amaze you! Some of them play dumb on set while others are already portraying geniuses, and others are hotties you would have never thought they actually had a regular job before Hollywood, or that at one point in their lives they were attending prestigious universities!
One of the stars of the hit comedy series “The Big Bang Theory” is not only a genius for her role, she is also a real life scientist! “Amy Farrah Fowler” in the amazing sitcom, portrayed by Mayim Bialik, is a superstar! Not only does she play a nerdy neuroscientist on set, she truly is one in real life!
In fact, Mayim got her PhD in Neuroscience in 2007 from UCLA, before getting her role as Amy – Sheldon’s girlfriend on The Big Bang Theory – the weird but genius scientist!
Bialik landed her first major role when she was just a teenager (from age 14 to 19), when she played Blossom on the series called..well, Blossom! She really was the star of the show!
The funny thing is, she gave up acting after Blossom wanted to pursue her studies in Neuroscience and then landed a role as a Neuroscientist in The Big Band Theory! Pretty meant to be, right?
John Legend is definitely a true legend! This singer is the first black man to win so many awards! Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony award is not what we would call average for such a young artist!
But did you know that John Legend is much more than that? Well, he is! The guy never ceases to impress us!
Although he always had a passion for music and singing, he thought that he should do his best and study something that would make it easier for him to land a more steady career! He decided to study English and African-American literature at the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated magna cum laude!
Little did he know, that music would become his entire life after college… Even though he managed to get a job at a Consulting Firm – in fact, one of the most prestigious firms in the world – Legend couldn’t shake his passion for music.
He would spend his days working on presentations for work, and his nights writing songs. Years passed until his big break came when he was introduced to Kanye West!
This famous actor is so much more than looks – you have to admit he is pretty damn hot! Ashton Kutcher who made his first appearance on our TV screens as Kelso from the hit comedy series, That 70s Show, is not just an actor!
Kutcher always had a thing for acting but decided to leave that thought behind. In fact he studied Biochemical Engineering at the University of Iowa, not your average degree and surely not something anyone can do just for the sake of it! What’s interesting is that his studies were the ones that led him to acting! How, you ask?
Well, in an effort to pay for his studies, Ashton started doing all sorts of jobs, even cleaning cereal off the floor at a General Mills factory! That’s when a talent scout saw him back in 1997 and introduced him to modelling! Not too bad, right?
Kutcher eventually started modelling for huge industry names, like Abercrombie & Fitch, as well as Calvin Klein. After all this, he realized that he could put acting on his plans again and worked hard to get his big break! In 1998 “That 70s Show” finally came into his life and made him a star!
This famous British actor is not just a comedian that made us laugh when we were kids (if you’re a 90s kid of course!). Even though his part as Mr. Bean showed us a guy that barely knew how to handle everyday situations, Rowan Atkinson is nothing like that in real life!
Born in 1955 in Durham, although Atkinson had a thing for acting, he studied Electrical Engineering at Oxford University! It was during that time that he met the famous screenwriter Richard Curtis and they started working together; writing comedy revues.
Atkinson got his big break in 1979 when he co-wrote and starred in “Not The Nine O’Clock News” which became a huge success and got him an Emmy Award!
Mr. Bean however, the famous TV series he starred in (1990-1995),was and still is one of our greatest childhood memories and we probably all still watch it on reruns!
If you thought that Chris Martin was all looks and voice, then you better think again!
The famous British singer, lead singer of Coldplay, didn’t start off as a musician. In fact, what he chose to study had nothing to do with music – or in this case, nothing to do with what any of us would consider a normal degree!
Chris Martin attended University College London and studied.. Ancient World Studies! What does this degree mean? Well.. Ancient Greek and Latin, something that apparently turned out to be pretty useful for his career (Not!).
The good thing about the University he attended though, was that his studies led to him meeting his future bandmates who were also studying there, thus creating what is now known as Coldplay!
With appearances all over the world and performances with huge names like Beyonce, Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West, we’re pretty sure that Chris Martin hasn’t regretted dumping Greek and Latin for all of this!
Natalie Portman has it all! Acting, Golden Globes, Oscars, and even a cute family with two kids! But her acting talent is not the only thing that she can be proud of!
Even though this Hollywood star’s acting career started when she was just a kid, with her film debut “Leon:The Professional”, she decided that she needed more than that in the years to come.
Portman had a serious acting career lined up for her by the time she was in high school, yet she went to Harvard afterwards and got her psychology degree in 2003!
That didn’t stop her from winning a Golden Globe for her role in “Closer” just a year later though, and many awards after that!
She wasn’t done studying though, she needed more and that’s why Portman also took some courses at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and even had two papers published in professional scientific journals!
You really thought that Lisa Kudrow is all about badly playing the guitar and singing Smelly Cat whenever she can? The famous Phoebe Buffay from the hit series Friends might have had a corky character for the show and being weird was what defined her, but in real life she is a kick ass scientist!
Makes her even more interesting, right? But wait! She is also fluent in French so the episode where she is seen trying to teach Joey French for a part was easy peasy for her! Lisa Kudrow made a huge name for herself after Friends and earned many awards – well deserved if we may add – but this famous star’s talents are not limited to acting!
Kudrow got her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Vassar College and even worked with her father, who was a physician, and started her research on headaches. When Friends came into her life, along with all this fame and publicity, our beloved “Phoebe” decided not to give up on her research and her work on the matter earned her credits!
This guy might be hilarious but he also has a huge brain not only used for acting! Ken Jeong was first introduced to us as Dr. Kuni when he did his film debut in the comedy film “Knocked Up” with Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl back in 2007, playing Heigl’s obstetrician (and boy was he qualified for the part – we’ll explain why in a few seconds).
This part gave him the chance to show off his talent and many doors started opening for him. The famous movie “The Hangover” is where we actually got to enjoy him as Leslie Chow, a weird and funny Asian mobster, and he got to work with Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis for the sequels of the movie!
But no matter how weird and funny this guy might be, what many don’t know is that he is actually a doctor! And we’re not talking fake doctor like “Ross Geller” from Friends..we mean actually studying Internal Medicine in New Orleans!
Although Jeong was already a doctor and actually had his own patients, he couldn’t let go of his passion for acting. It’s a good thing he didn’t, cause we would have never known how amazing of an actor and stand up comedian he could be!
What a hottie! This famous Scottish actor became world known for his lead role in 300 where he played King Leonidas! His 6 pack was not the only thing that we enjoyed in that movie since his great performance made him a star and a regular on lists about “World’s Hottest Men”!
Gerard Butler wasn’t always an actor though, even if he really wanted to! As a kid he loved movies and plays and his mom took him to several auditions but nothing really happened for him at that age.
When he had to think about his future, Butler decided that acting was something out of reach for him and not a realistic choice so he got into the University of Glasgow and became a lawyer and a solicitor! Yeap, that’s right! This hot actor was once a hot lawyer!
It’s a good thing he ended up hating his job and decided to pursue his dream of becoming an actor!
We are used to seeing this sexy 41 year old actor in some seriously successful movies on the big screen but James Franco has an interesting background and acting is not his only “hobby”!
Even though as a teenager he had some trouble with the law, for issues related to stealing, graffiti and even crashing some cars, Franco decided not to let this ruin his life. Instead he did his best, worked hard and got good grades just on time for graduation! Even though he started his studies at UCLA he dropped out a while later and started pursuing his career as an actor.
Years later, and even though he was already an acclaimed actor, Franco decided to go back to school – UCLA again – and get his degree in creative writing. He then decided to take things a step further and enroll at Columbia University for his Master’s degree. But Franco wasn’t done, he was on a roll and nothing could stop him so he also took courses in fiction writing and then even poetry!
Just when we thought that he had mastered everything he wanted, Franco surprised us when in 2010 he managed to get into Yale University and started his PhD in English! The famous actor kept on going after that with literature courses at another university!
Franco didn’t let anything he liked pass by without giving it a fair shot and it’s remarkable for someone who didn’t actually need to go into all this “trouble” after the great name he had made for himself in the movie industry!
Steve Martin is without a doubt one of the first names that pops into your head when you think of comedies! But this guy is not only hilarious, he is also extremely smart!
Martin was born in 1945 in Texas and when it was time for him to choose a career he went to college to study drama and English poetry. He then started his major in philosophy but decided to transfer to UCLA for a theatre major. But the guy was a true comedian and it wasn’t long before he realized that he should really pursue acting.
With famous movies in his track record and known for his sense of humour, Steve Martin became the go-to person for comedies. He almost always portrayed a goofy kind of guy, often so convincing that most of the people thought that this is who he actually is in real life!
Well, we’ve all underestimated him! In fact, Martin has an IQ of 142! Not too bad!
Matt Damon was introduced to the world with Good Will Hunting and since then has starred and produced a number of hit movies like Saving Private Ryan, The Departed, The Martian and many more.
But let’s go back to Good Will Hunting, shall we? Did you know that the script of this famous movie, in which Damon starred along with his best buddy Ben Affleck, was actually written by Damon while he was studying in Harvard?
This guy wrote the two time Oscar winning movie as an assignment in his English class! I’m guessing you weren’t expecting this. Neither did I, until I found out that Damon actually has an IQ of 160! Makes more sense now, right?
While in Harvard, Damon kept skipping classes in his effort to pursue his acting career until he finally dropped out before the film “Geronimo: An American Legend” was released in which he starred!
