We have all, at one point in our lives, fallen in love or gotten so hooked on a TV series that we just did not want to leave our couch and anxiously waited for the next episode to come out! Some of them were actually big hits and kept their good name up until the end with an amazing series finale…others however disappointed the viewers and fans so much that the good name they had built was tarnished once and for all!
What is amazing with these series, is that no matter how good the rest of the show might have been, that last and lousy episode would make fans think that the entire series was a waste!
We’re pretty sure that before you scroll down to see our worst-of, you probably already made a mental list in your brain with some series that had a lousy finale! You were probably disappointed by shows that completely messed it up towards the end and ruined the entire experience!
So go ahead and check our list to see if it matches yours!
Please be warned as there might be some spoilers in the next points to follow!
How I Met Your Mother
Talk about a letdown! How I Met Your Mother started off as a very, very promising comedy show with the main goal of finding out who the mother would be, right? Yeap, except for the fact that we only saw the mother for like two episodes during the final season of the show, only for the producers to tragically kill her off for the season finale! What a waste!
We had spent 9 whole seasons listening to Ted, portrayed by Josh Radnor, trying to explain to his kids how he met their mother, only to find out that the mother had been dead for years and for him actually ending up with Robin (Cobie Smulders) after so many years of just being friends!
Not to mention the fact that we spent the entire season 9 watching a countdown to Barney and Robin’s wedding, only to find out a few minutes later that they were getting divorced!
This is by far, a season finale that ruined the entire show for the fans!
No wonder so many people refuse to watch it on reruns!
The X – Files
This 1994 Sci-Fi/Drama series lasted until 2002 and despite the fans looking forward to what they thought would be an amazing season finale, the producers let them down with what seemed like a rushed episode – some would even call the entire season 9 disappointing!
The show was groundbreaking for its time; talking about, and showing, aliens that actually made you believe in their existence.
Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, the two FBI agents portrayed by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson had to work together in strange cases that had to do with paranormal phenomena, called The X-Files.
What disappointed us, and thousands of fans was that Fox – who was the star of the show – was gone for the entire last season of the series only to reappear on the season finale and waste our time on military trials!
Although Gillian Anderson really did her best throughout season 9 with a great performance, the fact that Duchovny wasn’t in the series anymore really let the fans down who actually started getting bored!
Never again has a series name been so accurate! Lost is the word for this show’s finale which left fans wondering what on earth really happened!
Was it all a dream? Did any of these happen? Was there even a plane crash in the first place or is it that they all died when the crash happened and none of what we had seen during those 6 years was true?
Lost was released in 2004 and instantly became a major hit! But after 6 whole seasons, its last episode, in 2010, succeeded in only one thing..confusing the fans!
Many reviews and theories have been written in an effort to explain what really happened during that last episode and what we can say for sure is that NO, they didn’t die when the plane crashed!
What the writers did for the last episode was to show events that happened both on the island and an alternate timeline. What this flash-sideways does is to show what could have happened if the plane had landed safely! Still confused? So are we!!
OK so this dramatic series didn’t end yet, however, there was one season finale that basically put an end to the show as we knew it and was the reason for many fans to give up on it!
Season 11 was a roller coaster with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) having some troubles in their marriage and McDreamy finally getting on a plane to Washington to work there. However, when a few episodes before the end of the season Derek returned and their relationship was great again we didn’t expect that this would happen!
During the last episode of the season, Derek was involved in a terrible accident and although he was OK and helped everyone until the ambulance arrived when getting back to his car, he was hit by a truck and died shortly after when the doctors in another hospital failed to do their jobs correctly!
Even though Shonda Rhimes (creator and writer of Grey’s Anatomy) has killed off many beloved characters throughout the series – you’d think that by now we would’ve gotten used to it – this was by far the most tragic loss! The co-star of the show, Meredith’s love of her life, and what the entire series was based on, was forever gone!
Fans were devastated – including me – and many refused to keep watching it after this!
This series started off really well in 2004 and kept the fans glued to their TV for its entire 8 seasons! It showed drama, mysterious killings, cheating and a group of female friends living in a suburban neighbourhood sticking together through thick and thin, at least for the most part!
But the ending? We just didn’t buy it! The finale of the “Desperate Housewives” was not what we expected and definitely not what the show was all about!
Although the producers did a good job at stressing us out during the final season with Bree’s trial and who killed Gaby’s stepfather, after all, the last episode kind of..sucked!
After Mrs. McCluskey willingly confessed to the murder, Bree was off the hook and everyone was relieved – including the fans!
What we didn’t like was the finale where we see that the group of women who went through so much together and after all those years of friendship and covering for one another, finally drifting apart! After everything, they move to different places and never see each other again!
What? Come on guys, you could’ve thought of a better ending!
That 70’s Show
Our beloved sitcom from the 90s that went on for 8 whole seasons (until 2006) was definitely hilarious to watch! All the characters contributed to the creation of a comedy series which was supposedly taking place in the 70s, a time of freedom and colourful cabana pants!
Although the TV series was a major hit, our last season was pretty much ruined when one of the stars of the show, Topher Grace who portrayed Eric, decided it was time for him to leave and see what else he could do in Hollywood!
The fact that Ashton Kutcher was also absent during most of the show’s final season didn’t really help either!
Eric only returned for the series’s finale but it was already too late for the fans, even though we see him trying to reconnect with his ex-girlfriend – and co-star of the show – Donna (Laura Prepon).
An entire season without the star of the show, and the fact that the producers chose to introduce Randy (Josh Meyers) as Donna’s new boyfriend had done a lot of damage to the show!
Not to mention that Jackie (Mila Kunis) ended up with Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) after she broke up with Steven (Danny Masterson)! What? How did that happen?
According To Jim
Although I was a huge fan of this comedy series, the last couple of seasons were pretty disappointing! Jim Belushi was always hilarious don’t get me wrong, and the fact that we got to see him acting like a dad and husband was pretty funny since he would always end up doing things his way – Hint, not exactly the reasonable way!
“According to Jim” went on for 8 seasons, but to be honest you could see that it was going a bit downhill since season 6! After a while, Jim and Randy (Larry Joe Campbell) seemed to be the only stars of the show, for a quite large number of episodes!
It was like seeing the same thing over and over again! No wife in the story, no sister-in-law after a point. I mean, it really did start getting a bit boring for everyone to watch those two arguing about the same stuff all the time!
Game Of Thrones
Game of Thrones has really made history and millions of fans from all over the world have watched all 8 seasons of it, from 2011 to 2019 when the season finale aired.
But was it all they had wished for? Apparently not!
The story of some very powerful families living in Westeros, a mythical continent, and their battle to control the Seven Kingdoms captivated the audience right from the start – even after seeing the boy getting thrown out of the window in the pilot of the series! The fantasy drama was based on the bestselling book by George R.R. Martin and everyone got immediately hooked!
The series finale was long-awaited by the entire planet, with everyone making up their own predictions about the ending. According to the fans though, the finale was a letdown and left loose ends here and there and not at all as exciting as they had hoped!
The Sopranos was a crime drama series which first aired in 1999 and kept its fans hooked on it for all 6 seasons up until 2007 for the season finale!
The story revolves around Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini, a mobster who is dealing with both personal and professional issues related to his family and businesses. These problems start affecting his mental health and that’s when he decides to seek professional help and eventually starts psychiatric counselling with Dr Jennifer Melfi (portrayed by Lorraine Bracco).
The show started off great and the cast was amazing but, even though the fans expected an equally amazing ending, what they got was basically far from it!
Unfortunately, for the finale, all we got was a black screen! That’s it! One minute we see Tony at the restaurant about to have dinner with his family, and then the next he looks up and boom! Black screen! Was he shot? That’s what every single fan was trying to figure out!
Two And A Half Men
Two and a Half Men was a comedy series that started off really well but ended up disappointing the fans midway and from there it kind of went downhill! The show that aired in 2003, lasted for 12 seasons and ended in 2015 with a finale that sucked for probably everyone who watched it!
The series was about a Charlie, portrayed by Charlie Sheen, a jingle composer and a casanova who lives his life to the fullest without a care in the world until his brother Alan, played by Jon Cryer, and his 10-year-old son moves in with him and completely disrupt his once beloved and carefree lifestyle!
The series started losing its viewers when Charlie Sheen was killed off at the end of season 8 supposedly when struck by a train in Paris! Sheen was actually dismissed from the show because of his drug addictions but that meant nothing to the fans of the series!
For the finale in season 12, we see Charlie Sheen’s stunt double ringing the bell of his house and before we even got the chance to say “Aha! I knew he would be back!”, a huge piano falls from the sky and crushes him! What? Why?
This crime series that debuted in 2006 and lasted for 8 seasons, with the show’s finale airing in 2013, disappointed the fans even before the final cut!
Promising as it might have started, Dexter went downhill after a point and fans weren’t quite loving it! The story about Dexter, portrayed by Michael C. Hall, an analyst for the Miami police and also a serial killer, who only picks murderers as his victims, was pretty thrilling!
So what went wrong? Well, after a point it got boring! And just when we thought that the writers couldn’t mess up the show, even more, they gave us an ending that made watching the series a waste in the first place!
Why? The fans witnessed Dexter removing his sister from life support and then committing suicide. All good up to here, right?
It could have ended there! But NO! After that, we see a bearded Dexter who is now a lumberjack! He actually faked his own death! Probably in case the producers decided to bring back the series?
We don’t care, we’re not gonna watch it anyway!
House Of Cards
What a great series this was! The suspense, the excitement, the crimes and passions of a guy who would do absolutely anything to become President of the United States of America!
And what a terrible ending!
House of Cards became a huge success right from the start when the first episode aired in 2013, but 6 seasons later, and after some bumps in the road that the viewers let slide, the grand finale let down the fans!
It all started when Kevin Spacey was fired from the series after Anthony Rapp’s sexual abuse allegations. People who loved the actor, and star of House of Cards, didn’t know how to feel about this. After all, the show was based on him and his road to becoming President even if he had to kill to get there!
After the fans finally managed to come to terms with the loss and the fact that his wife Claire Underwood, played by Robin Wright, was now the new President, the producers gave us a grand finale that was far from grand!!
President Claire kills Doug, her right-hand man in the Oval Office! We’re pretty sure that the writers could do better than that! Even we could!
