Reality TV shows are an interesting breed of entertainment. You often find yourself watching the downfall of society through the stupidity of others. You watch drunken binges, angry break-up sex, and people regularly stripping their clothes off to the camera.
Or you go to reality TV competitions, where you watch unlucky people get pushed to their limits in dire situations. It’s simultaneously the best and worst type of show out there. And you can’t look away.
There are always some breakout stars in the shows, along with people you love to hate. And those hated contestants are going to be looked at today. You’ll get to see what exactly they did to gain the ire of society.
Here are the most hated reality TV show contestants.
This leading man on The Bachelor is one of the show’s most hated bachelors. And it’s honestly not that hard to see why. Before when he was a contestant on The Bachelorette, he was charming. But once he was chosen to man the show, his true personality came out.
The man treated the contestants like dirt and would often be condescending and egotistical to them. He played with their hearts and then threw them to the curve in a harsher way than other bachelors. It is reported that he slept with three women on the show and treated them poorly.
Runner up Clare Crawley claims that Juan Pablo said something “vile and offensive” to her while they were on their helicopter trip, although she refuses to repeat it.
He ended up picking Nikki Ferrell, but the controversy didn’t stop there. Months after the show he still wouldn’t tell Nikki he loved her.
It wasn’t surprising that the two of them didn’t last. He was hated by viewers and, reportedly, by the producers of the show as well.
The only bright side to watching him was seeing the girls realize who he really was and rip into him.
America’s Next Top Model produced a lot of familiar faces, both good and bad.
And contestant Jade Cole falls in the latter category. Season six of the reality show, Cole was known for her bad attitude and high-profile antics. What made her stand out, even more, was the way she treated the other contestants. She was seen as arrogant and thought the other girls were beneath her.
Most of the fights that occurred in the house were due to her actions and she would never admit when she had made a mistake. During a CoverGirl commercial challenge, she forgot her lines and then claimed that she did it on purpose.
Cole ended up making it to the top three before she was eliminated. That soured her relationship with the show, as she loudly and publicly declined when asked to return for an all-star season.
At least something came out of the competition, as she signed with Elite Model Management.
Many people may know her from being part of President Donald Trump’s administration, but before that Omarosa was part of multiple seasons of Trump’s Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice shows.
Her attitude certainly turned off audiences, however people continued to watch her anyway. A TV Guide poll actually showed that 50% thought that she was the reality star that they hated the most.
She constantly fought with contestants and was known as a troublemaker both on and off the show. She even ended up filing a lawsuit against fellow contestant La Toya Jackson, accusing her of her fiancé’s death.
Her recent appearances certainly haven’t warmed the audience’s view of her. After leaving President Trump’s administration, she partook in Celebrity Big Brother. Her past appearances made her a big target from the get-go and she was soon eliminated from the show.
This Big Brother contestant was the one to turn the game way too personal. Her stint on the show involved multiple feuds with other houseguests over her mean girl attitude.
It was her racist comments that sealed the deal on America’s hatred. She made many controversial statements about fellow Asian-American and African-American contestants’ skin tone and looks.
She and her fellow racists turned the social experiment on its head and revealed the ugly underneath.
Gries’s comments backfired, making her a target in both the house and America, she was the topic of many main story newscasts, which doesn’t normally happen.
She was also fired from her job due to her comments and she wasn’t the only one who suffered the consequences. Her co-conspirator also lost her job.
Be careful what you say!
Tiffany “New York” Pollard became famous on the now-forgotten show ‘Flavor of Love’. Participating in the first season, she would viciously fight with other contestants to win the heart of Public Enemy member Flava Flav.
She referred to herself as the “head bitch in charge” and wouldn’t hesitate to throw down the other ladies.
Pollard used her infamy to her advantage, joining the show during the second season to help Flav get rid of contestants. She had her own dating show that lasted two seasons, along with its spin-offs.
She continued to appear on other reality shows, like ‘Botched’, ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ and ‘Family Therapy’ with Dr Jon.
Pollard is now remembered by the current generation through her appearance in memes.
That’s definitely one way to stay famous!
This Amazing Race contestant is known for one thing and one thing only: his temper. His personality was garbage and he would constantly fight with anyone and anything.
Not even his then-wife Victoria Fuller was safe from his wrath. When she carried his backpack to prevent it from getting stolen, it caused the team to finish in second place. Enraged, he shoved her, which is a big no-no.
As of now, the two are divorced and he is still one of the most hated ‘The Amazing Race’ contestants ever. He will go down in infamy, although he’s trying to move past his stint on reality TV.
He’s now a film director and got to work with Nicholas Cage, so it seems like he’s moving up in life.
The Survivor contestant featured in two different seasons. And nothing he did endeared him to the public or his fellow tribemates.
Colton had no difficulty betraying his tribe and working with the enemy, systematically ruining the tribe. He was known for his arrogant and obnoxious behavior, sometimes making racially charged statements toward other contestants.
His first season ended with him being medically evacuated, although host Jeff Probst doesn’t believe that his diagnosis of acute appendicitis was real.
His second season was just as controversial as the first, his bad attitude quickly making a reappearance. He ended up quitting the show seven days after the season started, making him one of Survivor’s most hated contestants.
There’s very little chance of him ever being asked back for a third season. Some contestants people love to hate, but Colton was just purely hated.
You know you’re bad if Jeff Probst doesn’t like you!
This time a contestant on ‘The Bachelor’, Courtney ended up winning the season and Bachelor Ben’s heart.
But that doesn’t make her well-liked. In fact, she’s one of the most hated winners in the series’ history. She was constantly arguing with the other women and would flaunt her relationship with Ben over them.
In a conversation with Ben about the women’s dislike of her, Robertson showed her true colors. “I’m so bored by them,” said Robertson. “They’re so vanilla and they’re very into themselves. It’s exhausting when you don’t really enjoy someone’s company and you have to sit there and live with them every day.”
Her child-like attitude certainly didn’t help any. Most viewers groan in disgust when she’s mentioned.
She’s only continued to build controversy with her tell-all book about the experience.
This RuPaul’s Drag Race queen is one of the best overall performing contestants, but that hasn’t endeared her to other contestants or fan. She was often getting into fights with other queens and was seen as a confrontational person.
After her elimination in season 6 of the show, she was welcomed back for the ‘All Stars 3’. That only made her more controversial as she eliminated herself. To her, she had done what she needed to prove and didn’t care about the title as much as other contestants did.
Although BenDeLaCreme is hated by a portion of viewers, she is also equally loved by others. Her elimination in season 6 led to an online petition asking RuPaul to bring her back into the competition.
That just goes to show that you can be simultaneously loved and hated by fans alike.
Not really a contestant, but he was so hated that he qualifies to enter this list.
Part of the show ’19 Kids and Counting’, the show chronicled the life of the Duggars, a very religious family who had a bunch of kids. It came out that Josh had molested young girls when he was younger. This included his sister.
And to make it even worse, it turned out that he was also cheating on his wife when the Ashley Madison scandal broke. He was sent away to a recovery centre to work on his sex problems, but that doesn’t stop him from being one of the worst reality show stars.
We say good riddance!
Another contestant on ‘Survivor’, Russell was hated for his gameplay and attitude. His arrogance was off the charts, and people began rooting for him to be booted off the show.
His canny ability to find hidden immunity idols and mess up the tribe’s plans made him public enemy number one. He would often steal clothing from his fellow tribe members and bury them. He also would burn socks and pour out the water. This was done in the name of psychologically weakening his competition.
This type of gameplay helped him make it to the final three twice, but his castmates were so turned off by him and his style of play that they denied him the million. And people were wise to his game by the third season, leading his tribe to willingly lose the immunity challenge just to get rid of him.
Hantz hasn’t been afraid to badmouth the show and other contestants, ultimately saying that the show destroyed his marriage.
That’s rough. But he wasn’t as bad as his nephew…
Russell’s nephew was a loose cannon.
Similarly, Brandon was on multiple seasons of ‘Survivor’, but he didn’t perform as well. His family connection didn’t help him much and viewers quickly grew tired of his attitude and gameplay.
He would flip out on contestants and everyone was wary of setting him off. He was eventually voted out but asked to return for ‘Survivor: Caramoan’, raising questions on whether or not he was emotionally stable enough to return.
His second season is what got fans really riled up, as he went on a rampage throughout his time there. His altercations with another contestant made others afraid of being around him.
They ended up having a special tribal council at the immunity challenge where they forfeited the win. Brandon had to be put separate from his tribemates because of the in-fighting. He was threatening to hurt them, so Jeff Probst had to step in.
His meltdown is one of the most legendary moments in Survivor, and not for the right reasons.
‘Big Brother’ fans almost unanimously hate JC. His bad attitude didn’t gain any affection from fans, and his poor gameplay didn’t help at all.
But it was his actions on the live feeds that really made fans hate him. He was caught on the live feeds trying to put an ice cream scoop on multiple housemate’s genitals. He also touched a female contestant’s crotch with his hand. He would go under a blanket in an attempt to touch them.
Fans were outraged. They slammed Big Brother for not removing him and allowing him to continue staying in the house. The longer nothing was done, the greater the hate for JC grew.
A petition was even created in an attempt to remove him from the house.
It failed and he was eventually voted out, but he’ll go down as one of the most hated contestants in the fans’ minds.
