They say that the Entertainment Industry is one of the toughest industries to be working in. Some Hollywood actors seem to have tasted the bitter side of their success, starting from bigshot to noshot and from somebody to nobody! Some have consciously decided to retreat from their career in Hollywood, while for others, their attempts and efforts to continue shining were simply fruitless.
1.Catherine Zeta Jones
The Welsh beauty, most known for the Mask of Zorro and Chicago, isn’t just a pretty face!
Her Oscar-Winning-role for Chicago was able to unfold her talent and it goes without saying that she’s one of the greatest names in the filming industry. She has an amazing filmography – some of her best films include Entrapment, Traffic and Red 2 proving that Catherine indeed screams talent!
It’s a true shame for Catherine to be fading away, but thankfully it’s her choice to silently withdraw from Hollywood and take less projects on the big screen. A series of health problems – husband Michael Douglas was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 – had seriously affected Catherine’s well-being and their relationship as a couple. Herself being diagnosed with bipolar disorder made her reconsider the importance of family and decided to take it easy with her career and started prioritizing her life.
According to the Daily Mail, Jones,is living the ‘zillionaire life’ taking vacays and loving-life, but most of all she’s a dedicated mother and wife who wants to make the best of her time with her family.
So bravo Catherine!
Tobey Macquire is mostly known for his Spider – Man role as Peter Parker and since Spider – Man 1 & 2 brought the biggest bucks in the history for superhero movies, Tobey Macquire became the centre of attention in the early 2000s. However, Spider – Man 3 didn’t share the similar favourable income, as anticipated. On the contrary, it completely plunged and Sony decided to cancel Spider – Man 4 altogether which let Tobey’s career in a stand-still.
They say beauty is a curse, but in this case forever-looking-young was the curse for Macquire! His never-aging face didn’t help him either, in the next roles he took on. Whilst the actor was trying to make his way through more mature roles, the audience could not relate to him and films such as Brothers in 2009 and The Great Gatsby in 2013, were not highly praised by critics
As if all of that wasn’t enough, Tobey had problems with the law, as he was involved in an illegal poker club and was required to pay a settlement for it. Mary Bloom who was the head of many poker games, did not help either when making nasty comments, via Vanity Fair, against Macquire. She recalled an incident which involved Bloom and Macquire, claiming that Maguire made her “bark like a seal who wants a fish” but what was most shocking was Tobey’s non-apologetic arrogant remark: “What’s wrong? You’re too rich now? You won’t bark for a thousand dollars?”
Not cool Spider – Man, not cool!
Cameron Diaz was introduced to the world in her debut film the Mask in 1994, along with actor Jim Carrey, where she instantly became the talk of the town. She was the all American beauty, as she had the blond locks, the legs that went for miles – she was the ultimate stunner!
She had starred in box – office hits like Shrek and Charlie’s Angels, but eventually her star started fading more and more. In fact, Cameron Diaz may have Shrek to blame, as she too seems to have the Shrek Curse. In many occasions A-list actors who have lent their voices for great animated movies, seemed to flap in the line of work, later in the future.
However, her poor choices didn’t help her either to continue her established acting career, as she was seen in movies that were not that well received either. Bad Teacher, The Green Hornet, The Other Woman, and Sex Tape are some of her movie blunders, listed under her filmography. Even her role in Annie in 2014, may had Diaz expecting a big applause, but all she got was probably a slap in the face by critics!
Brendan Frazer’s was once a shining star and made a household name when leading fantasy, comedy, action and sci-fi films. Brendan has the films Monkeybone and Looney Tunes: Back in Action and the Mummy Trilogy which gave him the push to rise to fame.
However, it wasn’t long before his fame started wearing thin. The Mummy may be one of his greatest films on his filmography, but the trilogy is also the reason behind the fall in his career.
In the Entertainment industry, time seems to be of the essence!
The 10 year span that took for production to complete the Mummy trilogy didn’t allow Brendan to take on other projects. Before he knew it, he started fizzling out and the jobs offered to him were of low-budget.
He had appeared in some Award Winning Films, but his acting, action and comedy skills were overshadowed by more prominent actors, plus his obsession over paranoid films didn’t come in handy either! His options and offered roles in the big and small screen became more and more limited to scarce.
His latest acclaimed film was in The Nut Job in 2014 but he hasn’t made a comeback for the sequel.
There was once a time when Taylor Lautner caused delyria and hysteria amongst teenage girls! It was the abs, the body, the husky look, his masculinity – he was definitely an upcoming star and he definitely had the whole package for it. Taylor Lautner has Twilight Saga to thank for putting his name on the map, but unlike his co-stars Kristen Steward and Robert Pattinson, he didn’t receive much success, post the Twilight Saga smashing hit!
As much as Taylor tried puttting his werewolf persona in rear-view-mirror, hardcore fans, just couldn’t let go that part of him.
Participating in the wrong movies didn’t help either. His leading role in Abduction in 2011, which was intended to be a thriller, the joke effect had taken its place instead – as evaluated by critics and audience. It is safe to say that it was one of his worst moments in his career.
Taylor still struggles keeping alive his acting profile as he is seen in very small roles on the big screen, as in Grown Ups 2 and The Ridiculous 6 and has now drawn more focus on TV roles, instead.
Katherine Heigl may have the angelic face, the enchanting, perfect smile, but all that glitters is not gold! Katherine had caused a stir of problems in her working environment and is considered one of the most hated people to work with, in Hollywood.
It was the diva demands – requests for bigger than large hotel rooms, her selfish requests that all staff works for more than 17 hours round the clock, per day, and the fact that made everyone work just around her schedule, is just a small sample of her out of line behaviour.
Most directors and co-workers that have worked with her, always had something negative to say about Heigl.
Heigl let out her ungrateful side, not once but two times, while bashing the movies and roles she played in, which left both her co-stars and producers infuriated. In interviews she had given, she admitted to not liking the film Knocked Up she starred in, characterizing it a misogynist film, whilst also commenting the script Grey’s Anatomy – which shot her to fame – stating that she didn’t think it could ever comply with the Emmy nomination requirements, as it was of poor quality! Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes claims that she couldn’t put up with such behaviour, anymore.
Heigl was apologetic more than once about her comments and behaviour, but the world already went sour. The fact that Katherine Heigl was also dropped by her publicist made it almost impossible to make it in the film industry. She has made a few attempts for some series such as Homeland which was cut short in the 1st season, but her film career is now is in flames and it might be too late to save it.
Macaulay Culkin rose to fame from a very young age, at the age of 10, when he starred in everyone’s all-time-classic Christmas film, Home Alone 1 & 2 in 1990 and 1992. Playing the role of Kevin felt that Macaulay was the most perfect fit for the part and everyone was speculating that Culkin was a wonder kid. He was one of the most renowned actors in the early 1990s and his future seemed utterly promising. Then followed very few on-screen successes, such as Richie Rich in 1994 which was well received, but was nowhere close to money making Home Alone Sequel.
It was the impeccable acting, the cheeky smile, the golden hair – whichever role he was given to feature as a child, he managed to execute it with great preciseness. Despite his young age, he seemed to be mingling with the right crowd – was even one of Micheal Jackson’s closest confidants!
Going into adulthood, called everyone’s attention, but for all the wrong reasons!
This transition meant that Culkin could no longer portray a young boy and seemed to struggle finding the right role for him.
Party Monster in 2003 and Saved in 2004 and other TV projects such as The Jim Gaffigan Show in 2015 didn’t amaze the audience nor the critics. In fact, all his projects in adolescence gave the sense that Culkin’s skills were not strong enough to carry him out to continue on the big screen nor on the small screen.
Macaulary Culkin had been through some very lows in his personal life too, which didn’t help him reach his full potential, in his career. The death of his sister in 2008 was an unbearable pain for him to take and along with the substance abuse were some of the aspects in his life, that were only holding him back in his profession.
Mike Myers’ fame began on Saturday Night Live and is widely known for his roles in Wayne’s World and Austin Power. Myers for decades on end, was a comedian on fire and undoubtedly a well-sought actor, who was an essential ingredient for success.
His career started going downhill when when he participated in the comedies The Cat in the Hat and The Love Guru which only appalled the audience rather than amuse it!
He is the perfect life example that when making one unsuccessful movie after the other, your star is bound to fade someday. That is also one of the main reasons that people have stopped giving him acting opportunities and proposals. Myers himself, even admitted in an interview he had with GQ that since 1991 he had only received no more than 15 scripts!
It is safe to say that Myers has disappeared completely from the movie screens which resulted him in completely hiding his identity in the TV show Gong Show, realising that this is the epitome of his acting career.
John Travolta, was one of the biggest names back in the ‘80s and was a guaranteed success whichever project he took on and whichever movie he signed up for. His dexterity in signing and moving his body to the beat caused every girl’s heart to skip a beat!
Travolta may have a filmography of all time classic films such as, Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction but for the decades to follow, his took a dive for the worst.Travolta’s films in the 2000s plunged in sales and his comedy films were characterised as grinchy and embarrassing. Some of his not so well received films include “Battlefield Earth”, “Swordfish”, and “Wild Hogs”
It wasn’t long before Travolta’s name transitioned from a big name to a risky name. Producers felt that offering a role to Travolta, would be considered a high stake move, or even a guaranteed failure.
It has been quite a while since we have seen the Grease lead actor in a high applauded film, the last one being Hairspray in 2007, while the premier of his latest film Gotti came crashing down less than 2 weeks before its release.
Credit was however given to Travolta for his role on American Crime History, but he still remains absent from the big screen.
10. Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey may be a no-Oscar man, yet he is a 2 Times Global Awards Winner, proving that the name Jim Carrey screams talent! He is one of the biggest comedians of his time – it is the ingenious humour, the great performing energy, the surreal talent along with the outrageous hilarious lines could even make the coldest man burst into laughter!
His has a lot of box office hits on his resume, some of them are Dumb and Dumber, Bruce Almighty and the Mask, which were great income revenuers, followed by some not so great income revenuers such as I Love You Philip Morris.
However the Dumber and Dumber sequel may had a smashing income hit of $130 million, but critics were very harsh on him, and that is when they became sure that Jim was not a good fit for them, any more, and they also needed to prioritize on guaranteed profits instead.
Also, Carrey’s vocal side did not help him either. He was a very loud and active protester against vaccination, causing a lot of controversy over his name. To make matters worse, his girlfriend suicide in 2015, put the actor on the spot, as his girfriend’s family accused him of sexually transmitting diseases, lying and gaving his girflriend the drug, she overdosed on.
11. Kevin Spacey
Oscar winning actor, Kevin Spacey was one of the first people that saw their careers ending in the blink of an eye, following the sexual Weinstein scandal.
It was not one, but a total of 15 solid allegations of individuals that came forth and gave their testimony of the sexual advances, that Spacey had led to them. One amongst them was Rent star, Anthony Rapp who recalled the advances led on him when he was just a teen, 14 years old.
Spacey tried to justify his case and minimize its, by issuing an apology trying to play down the facts.
This only lead to his career and his future work to come crashing down as Netflix was amongst the first ones to announce that they were cutting Spacey off the House Of Cards series, and the series were to continue without him.
The filmmakers of All the Money in the World took the turn and terminated their business affiliations with him. The film had already finished and weeks before its release, they decided to hire Christopher Plummer to reshoot the Spacey scenes.
Spacey has now completely vanished and it is safe to say that no casting agency will be seeing him any time soon.
12. Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy managed to make a name for himself for more than 2 decades, as one of the best comedians, if not the best comedian in the filming industry!
The squeaky, high pitched voice, the great smile skyrocketed each film he made in the‘80s and ‘ 90s.
However, hysterically funny movies for Eddie, now belong in the past as the source of imagination seems to have drained. In the past years his film choices The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Norbit and Meet Dave didn’t do any justice in his talent. Little by little he started fizzling out and producers have come to consider him as unhirable.
For this reason, Murphy decided to change focus in the genre he was committed to, and attempted to make drama films. Unfortunately, drama films gave the sense they were not the best match for his acting skills.
The one failure after the other started taking its toll on the actor’s psychology, as he seems to have lost his thrill and drive for filmmaking and has become a mere parody of himself.
It is a pity that we may no longer get to see some of our favourite actors on the big screen. It is a quite definite that most of the actors that are not cast now, have left a legacy of films, for generations and generations to watch!
All we can do is wait and see if they decide to embark on some other Hollywood paths or grasp any future filming opportunities!
